What I learned from English class
“What’s money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” -Bob Dylan-
I spent a lot of time pondering the mysteries of the universe while in my grammar and high school English classes. One day, while struggling to understand how to diagram a sentence, I asked the teacher why we had to diagram sentences. She replied that we were learning things that would be useful later in life. You know, from that time since, I’ve never needed to diagram a sentence. I’d guess that the only people who find it useful to understand how to diagram sentences are English teachers, and they only need it to pass on to their students who are going to become English teachers. Along those lines, I’ve often heard it said that you should ‘do what you love and the money will follow.’ I’ve not yet found that to be true in my own life. However, the days of my life being of limited supply, it seems absurd to spend them all doing things I don’t enjoy simply to subsidize my continued existence… So I can continue to do what I don’t enjoy, to make money to continue to live to do the things I don’t enjoy… Not unlike learning how to diagram a sentence.
There’s something cosmically funny in all this – I guess I just don’t get the joke.
Bob Dylan – wherever you are, I hate you.
