The Only Constant: Change
Contemplating change here this afternoon. In truth, now that I step back and look at things, it’s apparent that it’s been coming for years. But it’s been very slow – gradual. What’s different? At some point, often something kind of “snaps into place” and you realize the ducks that have been slowly and quietly arranging themselves for a long time have finally reached their intended (or not?) formation.
That brought to mind a song I wrote a few months ago:
I wish you well
I just don’t wish you near
Different lives, different aspirations
Need a different hemisphere
There’s no bitterness in my heart
Let me try to say it plain
The fire’s burned out, the ash is cold
There’s nothing left to gain
There’s a version of you somewhere
I thought I used to understand
but I don’t speak that language anymore
This is where I take my stand
Perfect strangers by design
No traditions to carry on
Just a quiet final line
I don’t need to cross it
It’s not so complicated
Do I really need to explain?
We’re just two perfect strangers
On two distant passing trains.
There was a day
When I could give it time
When I could look beyond the stories
Let the drama stay behind
I don’t see it like I used to
Something changed along the line
Not a question of forgiveness
Just a different state of mind
I’m finished looking back now
Not because it hurts to see
The past belongs to someone else
And that someone isn’t me
