We Came To Play
A bit of autobiographical musing. Dedicated with love to my partners in crime – Ronnie, Lou and Rick… you know who you are.
Lyrics:
verse 1]
I grew up in the 70’s with America and Bread
And Dewey’s major sevens are still ringing in my head
David Gates’ falsetto and Fogelberg’s poetry
Loggins and Messina and the Eagles’ harmony
[verse 2]
So much inspiration and how hard could it be?
We opened up for Hatchet at the Jacksonville OP
The crowd looked at us puzzled – Morris man and me
They expected Gator Country
But heard Old Tennessee
[chorus 1]
We came to play, we took our turn
Some dreams catch fire, and some just burn
No crown, no glory, no legacy
We came, we saw, we let it be.
[verse 3]
Down the road a couple years – the Eastover Resort
Stopping in one Friday night for comfort or support
Rick and Lou were singing and their songs blew me away
We formed a strange camaraderie that’s lasted to this day
[chorus 2]
We came to play, we took our turn
Some dreams catch fire, some just burn
No crown, no throne, no legacy
We came, we saw, we let it be.
[verse 4]
Morris man has left us, and Lou is gone as well
How many years I may have left only God can tell
Rick’s still making music – sometimes calls me on the phone
I’ve slowed down, but I still sing and write songs on my own
Loving now the life I live in the sunshine of AZ…
Content to tell the world I came… and saw… but let it be.
[chorus 3]
I came to play, I took my turn
Some dreams catch fire, some dreams just burn
No crown, no throne, no legacy
I came, I saw, I let it be
We came, we saw, we let it be.
