Way Back Home
Another new’ish one based on something I started writing in 2009. I wasn’t a trucker but I was trapped in a job and(in other ways) a life I wanted badly to escape. You never know where a song will take you…
Lyrics:
The argument I never win
Cold and empty, start the day again
The road reflects in hopeless eyes
A face of stone and a heart of lies
Pass the dragon and the radar traps
Talking on phones while the old folks nap
They promise me that this will be the year
There’s time to dream while the miles roll away
Somewhere there’s a house on a hill
Where the morning sun paints the sill
Of a window on a world that’s soft and warm
My name is on the welcome mat
By the doorway where I’ll hang my hat
Someday I’ll find my way back home
Truck stops glow in the dead of night
Coffee and neon, a stranger’s light
Stories traded over cigarettes
But every mile’s another debt
The highway signs all blur into the same
Counting the markers, changing lanes
A thousand towns but none are mine
Rolling on, I can’t leave the dream behind.
