The Song You Hear

The Song You Hear

When I’m writing and my eyes leak I know I’m doing my best. Lots of leaking on this one…

Some years ago, Wayne Watson wrote a song called ‘Watercolor Ponies’ – it was a touching song about his boys, and how their childish artwork was proudly displayed on the family’s refrigerator door.

I’ve always loved that metaphor – in a larger sense, that’s how it is with The Father and His children.

I wanted to write a song to express that relationship – the Father’s tender love for His children, and our responding love, given back to Him. I didn’t want to steal Wayne’s metaphor, so, being a musician, I used another more familiar to me.

I hope I’ve succeeded in doing that here…

Lyrics:

You orchestrate colors the dawn can’t hold,
In whispers of silver and measures of gold.
I echo your music with trembling hands,
singing of mercy with borrowed strands.

I listen to hear the music’s key,
My Lord, You wrote the melody.

You hear the song beneath the sound,
The heart that beats where grace is found

You hold the distance

and draw it near

You change my noise to something true —
Yet somehow… it still pleases You.
enduring love —

the song I hear.

You breathe the winds in a minor key
Teach the stars their harmony
silent now, with straining ears,
I search to write the song I hear

My lyrics stumble, my notes go wrong,
Yet You, Lord love your children’s song

You hear the song beneath the sound,
The heart that beats where grace is found

You hold the distance

and draw it near…

You change my noise to something true —
Yet somehow… it still pleases You.
responding love —

the song You hear.

And when silence falls between the bars,
You fill the rests with who You are.
A symphony written before all time,
I’m still learning to make it mine.

You hear the song beneath the sound,
gather pieces from the ground.
You lift my fragments…

You make them whole
Compose Your music growing clear
Every measure draws me near —
To the song You’ve always heard…
and the song You hear

Still learning the tune…
of the song You hear.
