Keep Gently
A lyric based largely on a bit of free verse I wrote in the summer of 2010 – during my “lost year”. Not a fun time. It felt like everything in my life was falling apart and I was crying out to God. I hope that comes through in the song.
Lyrics:
Was I holding any of this between us?
All the love I wanted so much to give away.
The ones I was willing to pour my soul out for,
Why does love have to hurt this way?
Was it You I was sensing through my blindness,
Feeling my way in the darkness back to You?
Keep gently this broken heart,
Hold it close when it falls apart.
If there’s something standing in the way,
Then sweep it all away.
Show no mercy, tear me through,
You’re the only one I bow down to.
Take me, break me, if You must—
Only – keep gently this broken heart.
I’ve been burning through the years like mercy,
Ashes rising every time I fall.
Still I hear Your whisper in the silence,
“Child, it’s love that costs it all.”
Every scar was a prayer that found You waiting,
Every tear just another turn back home.
Keep gently this broken heart,
Hold it close when it falls apart.
If there’s something standing in the way,
Then sweep it all away.
Show no mercy, tear me through,
You’re the only one I bow down to.
Take me, break me, if You must—
Only – keep gently this broken heart.
If this is what surrender feels like
Every breaking is a healing start
Only – keep gently, this broken heart.
Keep gently this broken heart,
When the pieces drift too far apart
Though I’m shattered, You still find me—
In your mercy You refine me.
Take me, break me, if You must—
Only – keep gently this broken heart.
