Balaam’s Ride

Balaam’s Ride

Do you know the biblical story of the prophet Balaam and his unusual donkey? Here’s a bit of self deprecating humor. The best humor always contains a little truth, no?

Lyrics:

(Yeah…)
Just another beast of burden, walkin’ through the dust,
Tryin’ to say somethin’ useful before I finally turn to rust.

I was born without credentials, just a stubborn streak… okay?
Too dumb to know the boundaries, too loud to fade away.
But sometimes words come outta me that ain’t mine to own,
maybe echoes from the kingdom I don’t yet call my home.

And if you hear me talkin’, don’t mistake the sound,
I’m no prophet or a poet — just a talking fool who found
That grace don’t pick its vessels by skill, degree or plan,
It’ll speak through any creature, even the one I am.

I’m just another talkin’ donkey on the road today,
Carryin’ messages I barely know how to say.
If the Lord can turn my mumblin’ into somethin’ true,
Then maybe there’s still hope for you. (And me too…)

I’ve stumbled through the years, bit my tongue on pride,
Argued with reality, then begged to let it slide.
But mercy keeps on callin’ in a voice I can’t ignore,
Sayin’, “Even fools can find their way, if they’re pointed toward the door.”

I ain’t got the wisdom, I ain’t got the smarts,
Just walking down that narrow road, sometimes in fits and starts
And if somehow my jabbering can wake you from your sleep,
I’ll gladly take my place among the simple and the weak.

Yeah, I’m just another talkin’ donkey on the road today,
Tryin’ to make a little sense of what it is I’m tryin’ to say.
If the Lord can take this foolishness and make it somethin’ true,
Then maybe there’s still hope for you. (Me and you)

And when my days are over, I’ll let the music speak,
humbled by experience that comes finally to the meek.
I’ll lay down in the pasture when my journey’s through —
Just another talkin’ jackass that Jesus somehow used.

Yeah, I’m just another talkin’ donkey on the road today,
Tryin’ to make a little sense of what it is I’m tryin’ to say.
If the Lord can take this foolishness and make it somethin’ true,
Then maybe there’s still hope for you. (Me and you)
