All Roads
Some years ago, a friend posted a photo of her son, sitting on the curb with a teddy bear, waiting anxiously for his Cinderella to arrive. The tagline was: “this is what pretty girls do to boys”.
I took an old, undeveloped lyric idea and tried to tell that story from the point of view of a guy who – for whatever reason, is trying – unsuccessfully – to “move on”.
Lyrics:
Rollin’ down the highway, but goin’ nowhere
Tryin’ to find somebody who can really care
Like you – say you do
That wanderlust is itchin’ and I don’t like the heat
They say get out of the kitchen, boy – don’t be dragging your feet
Cause you know
There’s plenty of other places to go
But it doesn’t matter where I go
All roads lead to you
Every long and winding road I know,
just brings me back to the truth.
Yeah, the way’s wide open, but the truth stays true —
All roads, all roads lead to you.
I re-arranged the furniture, tried changing my view,
Didn’t make a difference – it’s like the walls remember you.
Stumblin’ through my days feelin’ half-awake,
Like a dream I can’t break through.
I tell my friends “yeah, I’m doin’ fine”,
But my heart knows I’m lying too…
(Yeah, I know…)
The end of every road is you.
It doesn’t matter where I go,
All roads lead to you.
Every turn, every high or low,
Brings me back to what I knew.
Yeah, I’ve been tryin’, but I can’t break through —
All roads, all roads lead to you.
I thought a taste of freedom would set me free,
But the price it demands is just too high for me.
Every compass direction, every guiding star I choose,
Spin me back around to you.
It doesn’t matter where I go,
All roads lead to you.
Every song, every late-night show,
Feels jut like déjà vu.
the reasons keep changin’, but the truth stays true —
All roads, all roads lead to you.
