We Have Today

It doesn't seem that long ago
- and not so far away
impatiently I'd waited for my graduation day
finally in cap and gown that distant dream came true
is that the way these recent days have seemed to be for you?
Another day brings changes - and change can bring you tears
Here I am, amazed to say - it's been almost 30 years
The days don't pass by all at once, although it seems they do
I'll take the chance that's given me to say these words to you:
we have today - tomorrow's not been promised
we have today - and yesterday is gone
we have today to shape the way we want our lives to be
we have today only - we have today.
It may try your patience and make you roll your eyes
To have to listen patiently to older folks' advice
Experience brings wisdom, but sometimes the price is high
Advice unsought could be wisdom you won't later have to buy.
There's nothing that this world can give that will not pass away
There's always more of everything - but a limit to your days
The more you have, the more you want, it never leaves you whole
Only time spent in the presence of God will satisfy your soul.
you have today - tomorrow's not been promised
you have today - yesterday is gone
you have today to shape the way you want your life to be
you have today only - you have today.
